2006-2007 Ilinca Zarifopol Johnston Memorial Colloquium

For the spring 2007 semester, there will be two sessions for the Ilinca Zarifopol Johnston Memorial Colloquium: January 26th and February 23rd. The SAB is still seeking submissions for the February 23rd event. There is no formal topic for this session, but we ask that the paper uses one of the following approaches: comparison, translation and/or interdisciplinary work. The deadline for abstract submissions for this panel is February 10th. If you would like to submit an abstract, please send your proposal to our e-mail account listed below. The abstracts should include a title and consist of about 250-500 words.

The January 26th session will address the topic of translation. It will be held from 3pm to 5pm in Ballantine Hall 004, and all are welcome to attend. Afterwards, refreshments will be served at a reception in the Comparative Literature Lounge on the 9th floor. This colloquium will consist of the following presenters and works: Sheila Akbar's “The Essentialized Rumi; or, The Misadventures of Jalaluddin Barks”; Mira Rosenthal's "Reevaluation through Translation: On Czeslaw Milosz’s Translations and Promotion of Anna Swirszczynska in the United States and Poland”; Wendy Hardenberg's “Self-Translation: Identity, Exile, and Beyond”; Matt Rowe's translation, "Poems of Fernando Pessoa"; Genevieve Oliver's translation, "Poems of Maria Spaziani."
